JUNIOR/SENIOR TIMELINE FOR PRE-LAW STUDENTS

Spring of Junior Year
bullet Begin thinking of possible recommenders and speak with them regarding your plans for law school.
bullet Establish your criteria for what you want in a law school and begin researching schools.
bullet Prepare heavily for the LSAT and register for the exam early.

May

bullet Continue heavy preparation for the LSAT.
bullet Continue researching law schools.

June

bullet Take the LSAT.
bullet Continue researching schools.
bullet Begin work on your personal statement and resume and submit for critique to the Pre-Law Advisor as you complete drafts.

July

bullet Receive and evaluate your LSAT score.
bullet Using your LSAT score and GPA, begin putting together a list of schools to apply to.
bullet Submit your first draft of your personal statement and resume for critique to the Pre-Law Advisor if you have not done so already.

August

bullet If taking the October LSAT, begin (or continue) studying for the exam and register early to ensure a seat.
bullet Continue revising your personal statement and resume and submit for critique as needed. Try to have these completed by summer’s end.
bullet Refine your list of schools and try to finalize it by summer’s end.
bullet Register for the LSDAS. Be sure to order enough score reports for as many schools as you are applying to (minus the one report you receive free with registration).
bullet Order the LSACD or LSACD on the Web software to do applications or request paper applications from schools individually.
bullet Finalize your list of recommenders and compile information packets for them.

September

bullet Meet with those you have chosen as recommenders to ask for letters of recommendation. Be sure to have all paperwork prepared to give to them.
bullet Request transcripts from all undergraduate colleges to be sent to LSDAS.
bullet Meet with the Pre-Law Advisor to go over your list of schools.
bullet Begin working on application forms.
bullet Read applications carefully to determine whether you will have to write additional essays. If so, begin work on these immediately and have them critiqued as needed.
bullet Attend the Atlanta Law School Forum that takes place either later this month or in October.

October

bullet Take the LSAT, for those taking the October exam.
bullet Continue work on applications, including additional essays.
bullet Meet with the Pre-Law Advisor as needed.
bullet Send a handwritten “Thank You” note to your recommenders. This will serve as a reminder to those who have not already written your letter and an appropriate gesture to those who have. Follow up with recommenders as needed to ensure timely receipt of letters.
bullet Attend Emory’s Graduate & Professional Schools Day.

November

bullet For those who took the October LSAT, receive and evaluate LSAT scores. Adjust your list of schools if necessary. Meet with the Pre-Law Advisor as needed.
bullet Finalize all application forms, resumes, and essays for admission.
bullet Submit any Dean’s Certifications to the Career Center to be processed.
bullet Follow up with recommenders to ensure that letters have been mailed. If you used the Career Center to collect your letters of recommendation, you should submit your request to have your letters mailed out by mid-month.
bullet Submit applications either by mail or online. If submitting online, be sure to mail any supplementary forms to the law school that could not be transmitted online. If using the mail, make a copy of your entire application package and send the package certified mail, return receipt requested so that you have proof of delivery and signature confirmation. Or, you may use a private carrier such as FedEx or UPS.

December

bullet December 1- Preferred application deadline
bullet Begin investigating financial aid requirements at the schools to which you are applying. Find out about any paperwork that you will need to submit.
bullet Early action and Early decision applicants start receiving admission notifications.
bullet ENJOY YOUR WINTER BREAK!!!!

January/February

bullet Call all schools to ensure that your application was received and that your file is complete.
bullet Follow up with the appropriate persons regarding any parts of your application that have not been received.
bullet Have your parents do their taxes as soon as possible so that you can complete the FAFSA and all other financial aid paperwork.

March

bullet Begin receiving admission and financial aid award notifications from schools and weighing admission offers.

April/May

bullet Decide on which school to attend and submit your position deposit.
