Description of Show: Can’t get enough of those Bollywood melodramas? Does watching “Karma” perform on stage make you want to dance as if you have two left feet?
If so, then tune into Bollywood Funk – the only show on campus that brings the latest and freshest in Bollywood and Bhangra and discusses the issues from the subcontinent that affect you.
My show is unique because it showcases types of music that no other show on WMRE does: Hindi, Bollywood, Bhangra.
From what I understand, South Asians (someone with ethnic roots in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh) make almost 15% of Emory’s student population. And, it is possible to say that many of these students are in tune with and are avid listeners of music from South Asia (i.e. Hindi, Bollywood & Bhangra). As such, there is a clear cut demand for this type of music on campus.
Additionally, South Asian music is progressively making its way on the American pop scene. This is evident in Snoop Dogg’s recent duo with legendary Indian actor Akshay Kumar in the song “Singh is King”. Additionally, a few years back, Jay-Z performed a rap verse on the famed Indian composer Punjabi MC’s track “Mundian To Bachke Rahe”. These examples indicate that South Asian music is becoming more and more mainstream in America and is attracting a following from non-South Asian listeners as well – many of these are on Emory’s campus.
Lastly, the events that occur in the countries of South Asia (India, Pakistan Bangladesh) is becoming increasingly relevant to Americans. The massive coverage that the economic boom of India and the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai received from major American media houses (like CNN) is a testament to this. As such, issues that affect India are becoming more important to Americans, like Emory students. My show covers these issues and offers different perspectives to them.
