Todd Rose is taking a midnight train from Georgia with Senior Vice President and Dean of Campus Life Frances Lucas-Tauchar.
After two years as director of student conduct and one year as assistant dean of students, Rose announced Thursday this will be his last semester at Emory, as he follows Senior Vice President and Dean of Campus Life Frances Lucas-Tauchar to Millsaps College, a small liberal arts school of 1,200 students in Jackson, Miss.
Rose was recently named Millsaps' dean of students, a position the native Arkansan called "logical."
"I am not leaving to leave Emory," Rose said. "I am leaving for a great opportunity."
Rose said Millsaps is a place where he said he could make a difference. "Millsaps does not have the same diversity as Emory does," he said. "I want to increase diversity and their understanding of it." He said he also wanted to recruit more minorities for staff positions in his department.
Rose said he will leave Emory after Memorial Day. He cited Lucas-Tauchar, who will become President of Millsaps College next semester, as a major reason for his decision. "I wanted the opportunity to work with Frances," he said. "I love her leadership style."
Dean of Students Darnita Killian said she hopes to complete a national search for a new director of student conduct by August. She said Rose is hard to replace. "He is a competent professional who will be missed by all of us," she said. "But we might try to steal him back."
