I was hired by the most sophisticated welding company in the world to travel to the remotest region of the Amazon jungle to shoot a film about robotic welding. I was told that a region of 100,000 people were dependant on a pioneer industrial facility secluded deep in the jungle. The premise of the film was to document the breakthrough welding that was keeping an entire city in existence. As I assembled the small crew of adventurers, I had no idea of the amazing story I would discover lost in the Amazon. Armed with a simple 16mm package, a beta cam, and a DV cam, we shot from 6am to 10pm for two weeks straight in the harsh jungle infernoour goal: capture as much information as possible, while delivering on our promise to Welding Services International. Most days would begin by filming the digesters, the belly of the industrial beast. A digester is a 70 foot metal vessel where, through the processes of high pressure, high heat, and acids, Jaris breakthrough trees were turned into pulp. To get the shot I would be lowered into the vessel on a harness wearing a full-body oxygen suit, a protective camera housing, and a cool vest. The oppressive equipment was essential for me to withstand the 150 degree heat being generated by the jungle, the factory, and the robotic weld heads which were traveling up the walls, fusing metal all around me. After two precarious hours, Id be reeled out of the vessel, re-adjust to the world, and head into the primeval jungle in search of leopards, monkeys and exotic locations that had never before been photographed. After lunch, which usually consisted of a variation of grilled water buffalo, we would film aspects of Jaris social structure --school, hospitals, and recreation centers-- in search of longtime Jari residents who would share their stories of the old days. After a grueling, successful adventure my interpreter/soundman, cameraman, and I returned to Atlanta, inspired to share the story of Jari and its founder, Daniel K. Ludwig, with the world. That began what would become the last two years of my life. Completing the welding film in less than a month, my next point of action was to figure out how to tell the greatest story I had ever heard. With Jaris full support, and the help of a small staff, I compiled the largest body of research ever assembled on Jari and began to create my master plan. To date, I have personally funded the entire project, producing a job here, directing a spot there, constantly pouring the money back into the dream. This is an important story, for the people of Jari, for the financial leaders of the world, and for the future of our planet. My dream is to make this film and further his dream. I was hired by the most sophisticated welding company in the world to travel to the remotest region of the Amazon jungle to shoot a film about robotic welding. I was told that a region of 100,000 people were dependant on a pioneer industrial facility secluded deep in the jungle. The premise of the film was to document the breakthrough welding that was keeping an entire city in existence. As I assembled the small crew of adventurers, I had no idea of the amazing story I would discover lost in the Amazon. Armed with a simple 16mm package, a beta cam, and a DV cam, we shot from 6am to 10pm for two weeks straight in the harsh jungle infernoour goal: capture as much information as possible, while delivering on our promise to Welding Services International. Most days would begin by filming the digesters, the belly of the industrial beast. A digester is a 70 foot metal vessel where, through the processes of high pressure, high heat, and acids, Jaris breakthrough trees were turned into pulp. To get the shot I would be lowered into the vessel on a harness wearing a full-body oxygen suit, a protective camera housing, and a cool vest. The oppressive equipment was essential for me to withstand the 150 degree heat being generated by the jungle, the factory, and the robotic weld heads which were traveling up the walls, fusing metal all around me. After two precarious hours, Id be reeled out of the vessel, re-adjust to the world, and head into the primeval jungle in search of leopards, monkeys and exotic locations that had never before been photographed. After lunch, which usually consisted of a variation of grilled water buffalo, we would film aspects of Jaris social structure --school, hospitals, and recreation centers-- in search of longtime Jari residents who would share their stories of the old days. After a grueling, successful adventure my interpreter/soundman, cameraman, and I returned to Atlanta, inspired to share the story oxf Jari and its founder, Daniel K. Ludwig, with the world. That began what would become the last two years of my life. Completing the welding film in less than a month, my next point of action was to figure out how to tell the greatest story I had ever heard. With Jaris full support, and the help of a small staff, I compiled the largest body of research ever assembled on Jari and began to create my master plan. To date, I have personally funded the entire project, producing a job here, directing a spot there, constantly pouring the money back into the dream. This is an important story, for the people of Jari, for the financial leaders of the world, and for the future of our planet. My dream is to make this film and further his dream.
