Membership

Membership in Alpha Phi Omega is open to any Emory University student that believes in our three cardinal principles: Leadership, Friendship, and Service. Both men and women have the same opportunities in our fraternity. There are two opportunities each year for a student to join, once each semester. Both pledges and brothers have certain requirements to fulfill each semester which include the following:

Active Brother Requirements:

  • Brothers must attend weekly chapter meetings, Mondays at 7:10 in Anthropology 303
  • Brothers are allowed 3 excused absences and no more than 5 total absences
  • Brothers must complete 20 service hours
  • Brothers must attend both the induction and initiation ritual (Missing a ritual counts as two absences)
  • Brothers must pay active member dues each semester

If a brother does not complete the requirements, he or she becomes inactive and must complete a reactivation program determined by the president during that semester.

Each semester, there is an opportunity to rush Alpha Phi Omega. The previous pledge classes have been increasing in number each semester, with the average around 30 pledges. The pledge semester is used as a way to learn about all the aspects of Alpha Phi Omega. It prepares you to fully engage and take advantage of all the opportunities available within the chapter, and allows you to get closer to not only the pledge class, but also to the whole chapter. In order to pledge that semester, you must attend at least one rush event during rush week. You must then complete the following pledge requirements during your pledge semester. If you are not able to commit to some of the requirements, then pledging a different semester is advised.

Pledge Requirements:

  • Attend 6 of 8 pledge meetings, 5 of 7 chapter meetings, and 1 executive board meeting
  • Pass 4 tests
  • Complete 12 service hours
  • Attend various fellowship events within the chapter and pledge class including pledge retreat, name pulls, and clue week
  • Participate in planning of small group service project, pledge class fellowship, and pledge class legacy
  • Attend induction and initiation

Fall 2009 Rush Schedule:

Associate Status and NIB Associate Status

When brothers cannot attend meetings or brothers that have an extremely difficult semester ahead of them, they can petition to obtain associate status. These members find it necessary to cease full involvement in chapter affairs and must present a written appeal to be confirmed by the chapter by the third chapter meeting. In order to apply for associate status, a brother must be active for at least one semester. Students who study abroad or participate in something that requires them to leave for an entire semester automatically gain associate membership. Brothers may not be granted associate membership for two consecutive semesters, unless returning from a year-long study abroad program. Associate Brother Requirements include paying associate dues and completing 4 hours of service.

NIB Associate status is for newly initiated brothers who cannot attend either chapter or executive meetings due to academic or university related conflicts. To apply for this status, a brother must present a written appeal to be confirmed by the executive board and chapter by the third chapter meeting. NIB Associate Requirements include paying associate dues, completing 8 hours of service, attending rituals, and completing 2 hours of Fellowship.
